BOATS CAME TO LAMPASAS

August 25 - September 22, 2007

July 28, 2007 - Lampasas, Tex. - TJ Mabrey's exhibition THE BOAT SHOW is coming to Lampasas. This exhibition includes more than twenty sculptures made of marble and/or bronze. Mabrey, a sculptor who has shown her work all over the world, collaborated with Texas-born poet John Campion on the poem, "Boats," that she says "represents the essence of the exhibition." [The poem "Boats," by TJ Mabrey and John Campion, is available to the press.] It begins, "Tall, short, thin, squat/ black, blue, red, white,/ they bear our friends to us, animals, and wine./ Their markets and cafes give us a home./ Riding them slowly or so swiftly/ up bright rivers or across the plangent oceans/ makes us laugh and cry."

There is a strong narrative quality to Mabrey's sculptures. They are emotional, evocative, "dying to tell a story," Mabrey says. She hopes that the art will inspire others to write poetry and stories. In cooperation with art and English teachers at the Lampasas Independent School District, she has invited students to visit the exhibition and record their responses to one or more of the sculptures. Responses, with the students' permission, will be posted for visitors to enjoy.

TJ Mabrey has designs and sculptures in collections across the U.S., in Italy, Egypt, Lebanon, and The Netherlands. She maintains a home and studio in central Texas, and a studio in Italy for working marble and bronze.

John Campion received his MA from UT Austin. He has published several books of poetry, critical essays, translations, fiction, and other writings, and has participated in art and theater projects. He is the recipient of many awards. He lives in Berkeley, California, and is teaching at UC Berkeley in the fall 2007. The exhibition THE BOAT SHOW: AN EXHIBITION OF VEHICLES, VESSELS, AND VIEWPOINTS IN MARBLE is on view at 405 Pecan Street, Lampasas, Texas, from August 25 - September 22, 2007.
