Meadow Dancers installed

Artist Installs Large Moving Butterflies in Hanna Springs Sculpture Garden

Lampasas , Tex. - July 1, 2006 - Dallas sculptor David Hickman has a broken ankle, but that didn't stop him from driving to Lampasas with his wife, Linda, and Nancy Gray and Pat Cavness (and their grandson Zack) to install his 2005 sculpture of three kinetic (moving) yellow and blue butterflies with red accents. Hickman arrived with the group at Campbell Park , Lampasas, at around 6 p.m. on July 29, 2006. Volunteers were on hand to assist, including Harrell Clary of Greenland Services, who brought his crane to help lift the large and awkward metal creatures.

Once hoisted up, the butterflies swayed and soared in the breeze. Onlookers gasped with admiration. David and Linda Hickman wondered about a different name for the sculpture that was most recently on view at the Dallas State Fair. Several ideas were floated about: Papillon was one. Finally, they hit on "Meadow Dancers," which seemed to express their joyful movement in Campbell Park .

David Hickman has loaned the sculpture to the City of Lampasas for one year. Lampasas Association of the Arts negotiated with Hickman to place the sculpture in the Hanna Springs Sculpture Garden , where Hickman is represented by a piece titled "Portal." Last year, Hickman lent "Duet," which stood by the Visitors Center in Lampasas.

Hickman is an award-winning sculptor whose most recent accolade was Artist of the Year, presented by the Dallas chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
